September is a much cooler month than August and the days are noticeably shorter as Summer changes into Autumn.

The kids are back at school which may mean some more time to yourself during the day. This month is about focusing on your bulbs for next year’s blooms.

Here is what we are doing in the garden in September.

General garden maintenance

• Keep your garden watered especially new plants and containers.
• Clear any fallen leaves and debris.
• Watch out for mildew and fungal diseases – remove infected leaves and leave room for air.
• Deadhead plants and perennials to encourage more blooms – unless collecting seed.
• Start a new compost heap.
• Harvest vegetables as they become ready.
• Trim hedges as they won’t grow as much now.
• Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners

What to sow and grow this month

• Plant bulbs ready for Spring blooms.
• Direct sow spinach under a cloche for protection.
• Sow red hot pokers into pots and trays outdoors.
• Sow violas, lupins, aquilegia’s and hollyhocks in a cold frame to plant out for Spring.
• You can still sow turnip seeds into well prepared beds.
• Let marrows, pumpkins and sqaushes dry ripen and dry in the sun.
• Harvest potatoes on a warm and sunny day. Leave them out to dry.
